This region of British Columbia has the best water in Canada. It is also the country's largest consumer of water. Although we have abundant rainfall, lakes and flowing streams on the North Shore, water management expert, Dr. Hans Schreier, says we need to pay attention to how much water we are using--and running down the drain. Given urban growth, land use intensification and the increasing extremes of weather driven by climate change, we need to reduce our "water footprints".
Dr. Scheier has worked globally and locally on watershed studies and education. A professor in the Institute for Resources and Environment, University of British Columbia, he has done research and education in Nepal, South America, Asia, and Canada, including North Vancouver.
He will bring his international experience home to Cool Drinks, "Ethics of Water in an Uncertain Future," on Wed March 9.
